My Username and/or Password isn't working!

IMPORTANT: our staff cannot access your password or change your account information. Please do not send us your account credentials. Only you can troubleshoot password issues!

If you're logging in to eBird Mobile:

First, open a web browser and log in to eBird.org. If you are currently signed in, log out and then try logging in again.

If you can log out AND back in to eBird.org, enter the exact same username and password (including the correct capitalization and punctuation) on the Account Settings page of eBird Mobile.

If you cannot log in to either eBird Mobile or eBird.org:

  1. First, double-check your username by sending yourself a username reminder
  2. Then, reset your password
  3. Log in to eBird.org with your username and new password
  4. If that works, use the exact same username and password to log in to eBird Mobile

Repeatedly seeing error messages when logging in? Take a screenshot and send it to us, along with detailed information on when and where the error occurred.

If you can no longer access the email associated with your Cornell account: contact us for further assistance. Include both your current eBird email address and the new email you'd like to use.

Changing your eBird username or password

Where can I find my eBird Username?

Your eBird username is displayed at the top right corner of any eBird.org page when you are logged in. This is viewable only to you and never seen by the public, so as long as you have it written down somewhere safe so you don't forget it, it’s not important if there is a typo in your username.

If you are logged out and cannot remember your eBird username: click the "Forgot Username?" button on the eBird login screen and enter the email address associated with your eBird account. You will receive an email listing all the username(s) tied to that email address.

Some folks have created multiple eBird accounts accidentally. If you ask for a username reminder, you may get several usernames back. If so, you should move your data from redundant accounts to a single account so your lists are accurate (see below for instructions).

How do I change my eBird Username?

At this time it is not possible to change your eBird username. Please note that your username is not publicly displayed on your checklists. If you really want to use a different username, you can create a new eBird account and transfer your observations by sharing them. After creating an account with the new username, follow the Consolidate Multiple Account instructions below. NOTE: consolidating accounts will not work for photo or sound uploads!

How do I reset my eBird password?

If your password isn't working or you can't remember it, you can reset it by opening the eBird login screen and clicking “Forgot Password?” below the large blue “Sign In” button. You must enter your eBird username into the password reset form. This will send a password reset link to the email address on your Cornell Account page; please be sure the email address associated with your account is correct and up to date!

Changing your password will log you out of any devices with eBird Mobile installed; you will need to log back in to eBird Mobile on each device after your password is changed.

Updating your personal information

To update your first or last name, address, email, password, or other information, click your username in the top right corner of any eBird.org page and select “Cornell Lab Account” from the dropdown menu.

Edit your eBird Profile

To change your profile picture and “About Me” info:

  1. Open My eBird
  2. Click on “Your Profile” in the upper right corner
  3. Click “Edit Profile” on the left, under the profile picture

Merge eBird accounts

The best way to combine accounts is for you to log in to redundant accounts and consolidate the data into a single account.

  1. Log into the account(s) that you no longer want to use
  2. Share each checklist with the username of the primary account where you want to keep your data. Note: This process is much faster if all of your accounts are eBird Friends
  3. Be sure to accept the checklists into the primary account BEFORE deleting them from your secondary account.
  4. Once finished, delete the account that you no longer want to use OR change its password to something like "NEVER USE"

Merging accounts will NOT transfer photos or audio recordings. You must re-upload media items to checklists using the new primary account.

Network errors on eBird Mobile

If you are encountering error messages or network issues while using eBird Mobile, the first step is to ensure you are properly logged in to your eBird account. Re-enter your username and password in the Account Settings then try to use the app again.

If you enter your username and password correctly, you will be returned to the Settings page with no errors. If you are unable to log in to the app, see troubleshooting your username and password above.

Still having issues with eBird Mobile? Take a screenshot of the error and send it to us with a detailed description of the problem. Please describe the issue in such a way that we can reproduce it on our own devices.
