Media use in scientific publications
If you use Macaulay Library assets in your research, please give credit in the publication as follows:
Use and citation of a single recording/photo/video in a publication
Species name (ML#####)
- Example: Turdus lawrencii (ML126794)
Variant: Link to specimen page (e.g., https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/126794) if possible
- Example: Turdus lawrencii (ML126794)
In the acknowledgement section of the paper, please also acknowledge receipt of media from “Cornell Lab of Ornithology | Macaulay Library”
Use and citation of numerous recordings/photos/videos at the end of a publication
“We used the following recordings from the the Cornell Lab of Ornithology | Macaulay Library: ML#####, ML#####, ML#####, etc.”
- Example: “We used the following recordings from Cornell Lab of Ornithology | Macaulay Library: ML12645, ML33245, ML23567, ML45678.”
If you are using a large number of assets and it is not practical to include them all in the main body of the publication, please include a full list in the appendix.

Embedding/sharing media on a website
Please note that embedding/sharing media should be used for non-commercial purposes only. Any use that generates revenue, including use by a for-profit company, should be requested using our ticketing system.
It's easy to embed Macaulay Library media on websites or other pages on the internet. Simply go to the Macaulay Library page for the piece of media you are interested in and click "Embed." From the embed menu, choose your preferred size, then click "Copy" to copy the HTML code for use on your page. The appropriate data and credit will automatically display along with the image, sound, or video.
