Does Merlin work offline without cell service or an internet connection?
Yes! If you are planning to travel, or if you want to use Merlin offline without an internet connection, you can download all the birds in a region to My Offline Birds. To do this, open Merlin, and then open the Settings. Tap on "My offline birds." From here, you can add a region to download birds for offline use.
Do I need to download Offline Birds, or will Merlin work without them?
If you have an internet connection, Merlin will automatically download the birds in your current area. Merlin will also regularly automatically update this information when you have an internet connection, so your information will always be up to date. So, you do not need to worry about downloading Offline Birds unless you are planning to travel, or if you want to use Merlin offline without an internet connection.
Merlin's Sound ID works independently of Offline Birds, and will work the same with or without any Offline Birds downloaded.
When I download Offline Birds, can I choose the download size to take up less space on my phone?
Yes! To keep the download size small, bird regions come with just a few sample sound recordings for each species. If you want more sounds and have enough storage space on your phone, you can choose to download additional sounds for a region for a more complete set of information.
Merlin's Sound ID works independently of these downloads, and is not affected by your choice to download additional sounds or not.
How can I clean up storage space?
In "My offline birds," there are two ways to reduce the size of Merlin's downloads and save storage space:
- Clean up space: Tap the "Clean up space" button to remove birds not found in regions you have downloaded.
- Remove downloaded sounds: If you have downloaded a region and chose to download all sounds for that region, you can remove these by tapping on the region you have downloaded, and then tapping on "Remove."
If Merlin is still taking up too much space on your phone, try checking your saved sound recordings in "My Sound Recordings" on Merlin's home screen. The recordings you make with Sound ID can take up a considerable amount of storage space! To free up space, we recommend deleting any recordings you no longer need.
